Funding Community Needs

Connecting philanthropic resources with community needs, Triangle Community Foundation helps make philanthropy a way of life throughout our region. Each week, the Foundation makes grants to nonprofit organizations throughout the Triangle and beyond. In addition, we administer a variety of programs and scholarships for the community’s benefit. They include our signature program Send A Kid To Camp, which raises money to send disadvantaged youth throughout our region to summer camp and our newly launched Community Grantmaking Program, which provides a minimum of $300,000 annually to support initiatives promoting civic engagement and youth leadership & development.

The initiatives are many, and the impact is great because, as the donor stories below illustrate, we’re building communities through philanthropy.

And, as she asserts, referring to a recent national study, it’s “the unsurpassed opportunity choral singing gives people to become part of an activity that involves and elevates them artistically—and often spiritually—it builds community, and results in a ‘product’ of memorable beauty.”  more ...

Bridging Cultural and Social Divides – the Umesh and Usha Gulati Charitable Fund of Triangle Community Foundation

“It’s not about giving, it’s about sharing,” says Usha Gulati. “Gandhi said that we are ‘all trustees of God’s wealth.’ We should take only what we need and share the rest.” Umesh adds, “Giving is a form of sacrifice called yajna in Sanskrit. It is through sacrifice that one begins to purify one's heart, erase one's ego and connect oneself with those who are not as privileged as we are.” Usha and Umesh have been sharing with others since they came to this country from New Delhi, India, 41 years ago.  more ...

Honoring a Life Cut Short – the Mekye Malcolm Memorial Endowment Fund of Triangle Community Foundation

He was her butterfly child. Nayo Watkins reflects, “Something about his gentle, free spirit and the serene and flightful nature of butterflies seemed akin.” Her son, Nyamekye “Mekye” Akil Malcolm had dyslexia. For Mekye, learning differences led to frustration, frustration led to depression and depression led to suicide at age 16. Her youngest was gone. She knew that something had to be done.  more ...

Drawing on a Lifetime of Experience – the Perry Colwell Fund of Triangle Community Foundation

Some people think that retirement is for resting and relaxing. Not Perry Colwell. For Perry, a former Senior VP at AT&T, retirement is the perfect time for riding his antique motorcycles, building a Caterham Seven sports car and giving back to the community. Since he retired and moved to the Triangle from New Jersey, Perry has been indulging his love of all things automobile and traveling the world with his wife Betty. He has also spent much of his time helping local nonprofits strengthen and grow their business capacity through his work with Executive Service Corps (ESC) of the Greater Triangle.  more ...
