Triangle Community Foundation Becomes Official Partner of U.S. Census
Partnership Aims to Get Every Triangle Resident Counted

Durham, N.C. (August 31, 2009) – Triangle Community Foundation President Andrea Bazán announced today an official partnership between the U.S. Census and Triangle Community Foundation.  The Census partnership program is a nationwide effort to combine the strengths of local governments, community-based organizations, faith-based organizations, schools, media and businesses to ensure a complete and accurate 2010 Census.

“The Census provides the government with more than just a headcount,” Bazán said.  “Every year, Census data helps determine how more than $400 billion of federal money trickles down to communities.  It guides local planning efforts, such as the placement of new roads, schools and hospitals.  And because Census data helps to shape legislative districts, it affects our voice in government.”

As a Census partner, Triangle Community Foundation will work to educate Triangle nonprofit leaders about the importance of getting every resident counted.  The greatest challenge will be reaching the populations that are by definition hard to reach: people who are homeless, people who are in prison, people who are here illegally.

Triangle Community Foundation will work hard in the coming months to distribute Census materials and to mobilize the Foundation’s many business, government and nonprofit partners to do the same.  If successful, the result will be a well-represented community with greater opportunities to benefit from public funding and programs.
