IMMEDIATE RELEASE
GLAXOSMITHKLINE AWARDS TRIANGLE AREA RESIDENTS WITH
2009 OPPORTUNITY SCHOLARSHIPS
Research Triangle Park, NC (July 29, 2009) – On Wednesday, July 29, Triangle Community Foundation and GlaxoSmithKline honored six local residents with the 2009 GlaxoSmithKline Opportunity Scholarship during a special awards ceremony.
Each year, GlaxoSmithKline awards scholarships through its Opportunity Scholars program, which is administered through the Triangle Community Foundation. Raleigh residents Alisha Robinson and Theresa Hamilton, along with Zebulon resident Matthew Barbee, Chapel Hill resident Carmen Khorram, Wake Forest resident Michele Rapp and Vivian Doan from Durham received scholarships during the ceremony.
The purpose of the scholarship program is to recognize individuals who have endured difficult circumstances – serious illness, domestic violence and personal loss – and yet, have pursued an education as a means of changing their lives. These scholarships are an attempt to remove at least one of the obstacles to continuing their education.
The scholarship winners accepted their awards during a special reception hosted by GlaxoSmithKline’s North America Pharmaceuticals President Deirdre Connelly and Mary Linda Andrews, director, GSK Community Partnerships program.
