George and Mary Newton Scholarship

Administering Organization

Triangle Community Foundation

Purpose

The George and Mary Newton Scholarship Fund was established in 1988 by Newton Instrument Company in honor of the founder and his wife, and in tribute to their lifelong commitment to education and training.

George Newton began Newton Instrument Company, originally a manufacturer of telecommunications equipment, in 1949.  Because he was a skilled machinist and because the company was dependent on technical skills of its employees, he became an early advocate of technical education.  He was a Founding Trustee of the Durham Industrial Education Center (now Durham Technical Community College) and served as Chairman of the board from 1980 until present.  In 1988, he was honored by Durham Tech when the George W. Newton Industrial and Engineering Center was named in his honor.

George Newton’s work was strengthened by a vital partnership with his wife, Mary.  Together they raised five children, and two of them, Wallace and Walter Newton, continue the family tradition in management of Newton Instrument Company.
