I. Overview of Organization and Position

Triangle Community Foundation is a leading nonprofit in the Triangle region of North Carolina and the country with a reputation for integrity and effectiveness.  Its mission:  to connect philanthropic resources with community needs, create opportunities for enlightened change and encourage philanthropy as a way of life in the Triangle region of NC.  The Foundation has current assets of more than $130 million held in more than 750 separate charitable funds.  Last year the Foundation made more than $15 million in grants to the region and beyond. 

The Director of Finance is a senior-level position responsible for the fiscal, investment, budget management, and audit functions of the Foundation.  The person in this position has as his/her responsibility to assure that the Foundation is operating in accordance with generally accepted accounting principles and with the highest and best financial practices within the community foundation and business communities.  H/She reports to the Foundation’s President, staffs the Board’s Finance, Investment and Audit Committees, and reports on the Foundation’s financial status to the public. This position supervises the Associate Director of Finance, the Receptionist/Office Assistant, and other staff as appropriate.

This position will require an average of 30 hours per week with flexibility as agreed upon within TCF guidelines. This is a senior level, permanent position of the Foundation, with benefits.

II. Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Investments:

  • Staff Board Investment Committee (reports to Finance Committee).
  • Work with the Investment Committee to select and evaluate investment consultant and investment managers.
  • Serve as a liaison with investment consultant and managers.
  • Create and evaluate system for tracking investment performance and allocating investment returns across individual funds.
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of investment returns for fundholders, Board and staff.
  • Ensures that the Foundation is in compliance with best practices
  • Regularly works with the President and the rest of the staff to ensure that investment information is communicated to the appropriate audiences (fundholders, the public, etc).


Audit:

  • Responsible for the Foundation’s ongoing relationship with its audit firm
  • Staff Independent Audit Review Committee.
  • Work with Audit Committee to select and review audit firms.
  • Oversee yearly audit, ensuring that it takes place in a timely and collaborative fashion
  • Prepare the yearly 990 Report


Operations

  • Analyze Foundation operations to pinpoint opportunities and areas that need to be expanded or reorganized.
  • Responsible for the Foundation’s risk management functions.
  • Ensure that the Foundation has strong internal control policy and procedures and that they are updated
  • Stay current with technology that could enhance investment management and financial systems.
  • Create quarterly fund reports for each charitable fund (paper and online.)
  • Finances

      The Director of Finance oversees the Financial Books of the Foundation. This includes:
    • H/she staffs the Finance Committee of the Board, which meets quarterly and reports on the Foundation’s activities.
    • Together with other members of the Finance Department, develops a yearly budget for the Foundation. Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial reports and financial trends in order to assist the Board and President in performing their responsibilities.


    Special Projects

    From time to time, the Director of Finance will be asked to assist with special projects critical to the success of the Foundation.

    III. Desired Experience, Education, Skills and Knowledge

    This is a unique position for a seasoned, experienced, senior-level financial executive seeking an opportunity to work at a leading and growing organization. The position will require entrepreneurial thinking, and a good temperament. The Foundation is seeking a person who is a good fit internally with its excellent staff, as well as externally with its many constituents. This person must be an excellent ambassador for the Foundation and enjoy playing that role.

    • Strong commitment to the Foundation’s goals and mission
    • A minimum of ten years experience in financial management. Non profit or foundation experience helpful.
    • Undergraduate degree in accounting, business or related field, or substantial professional experience. Master’s Degree or commensurate work experience preferred.
    • CPA
    • Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work cooperatively with colleagues, supervisor, grantees, and donors.
    • Flexibility; able to adjust activities and priorities and take on new responsibilities and balance many tasks at once.
    • Deadline driven.
    • Dependable. Excellent judgment and maturity.
    • Strong knowledge and experience in computer systems, including accounting, databases, Windows and network systems. Interest in continuing to gain such knowledge and incorporate it into the Foundation’s operations
    • Strong analytical skills. Intellectual capacity and willingness to engage in learning from the Foundation sector.
    • Detail oriented and organized.
    • Sense of humor always a plus.  Positive attitude.

    Salary commensurate with experience.
